Micronautics Research Corporation Sound Effects Specification v0.9.5

Sound effects library demo

A demonstration program for the sound effects library is available, and runs on a King Billion in-circuit emulator with an ED target board.  Please contact us to arrange a live demonstration. The demo runs in prerecorded mode only.

Keypad overlay

The demo overlay for the ED keypad is shown below, slightly enlarged.  You can print out a copy and attach it to the ED board keypad with tape.  To print out a copy, either download the Adobe Illustrator CS original or a full-sized PNG.

Not all of the sound effects on the keypad overlay have been implemented in this prerelease.  The currently implemented sound effects are Dry, Backwards, Echo, Radio and Reverb, one or more sound effects can be active at once.

Hardware setup

We have tested with DMCU_ICE_D0001C V3.0.

  1. Ensure that jumpers are installed on headers 18 through 21 on the ICE.
  2. (Optional) connect a microphone to the MIC1 header. Ensure that the red wire is attached to the positive post.
  3. Connect a powered speaker to the PHONE JACK.
  4. Turn the UR1/SPK VOLUME potentiometer fully clockwise.
  5. Ensure that all the headers are fully seated.
  6. Carefully connect the parallel cable to the PC that will download the binary image of the demo. It is easy to accidently disconnect a daughter board when making this connection.
  7. Carefully connect power.

Downloading to the ED target board

The King Billion development tool called Barboo downloads binary data to an ICE. The following procedure downloads the two images which comprise the Micronautics Research Audio Library Demo to an ICE.

  1. Download the King Billion MBDMIDS Tool Collection v1.1.9 or later from the URL that you received by email and install it (a reboot is not necessary yet.)
  2. Download the King Billion Dogstar v1.1.0-12 or later according to the instructions in the same email and install it (a reboot is not necessary yet.)
  3. Download the King Billion Barboo v1.1 or later according to the instructions in the same email and install it (a reboot is not necessary unless a prior version of the King Billion software was previously installed.)
  4. Download the Micronautics Research Audio Library Demo from the URL that you received by email and unzip the downloaded image to a directory of your choice.
  5. Attach the parallel port cable to your computer and apply power to the ICE.
  6. Run Barboo. The ICE Configuration dialog will immediately appear.
    1. Set ICE Version to "D0001E and after".
    2. Set Download path to "ICE DATA BUS VIA DOWNLOAD BOARD".
    3. Verify that Debugger is set to "T01".
    4. If your ICE is connected via a parallel port other than LPT1, select the appropriate port.
  7. The ICE Configuration dialog should now looks like the following; press OK:

  8. You should see the following appear briefly:
    Barboo progress

No ICEIf instead of the progress dialog above, you see the dialog box shown to the right, check the following and restart Barboo:

    1. Is the ICE is connected via a bidirectional parallel port cable?
    2. Is the ICE plugged into the wrong printer port?
    3. Does the ICE have power? (The red power LED will light if so.)
    4. Is the printer port configured for ECP mode?
  9. Use the Barboo File/Open... menu item to load the micronauticsDemo.lcf linker control file from the directory that you unzipped the demo from. The micronauticsDemo.lcf linker control file defines several binary images. To run the demo we only need to burn two of them: ICE_DOWNLOAD.bin and SPACE_ROM.bin.
    1. Select the ICE_DOWNLOAD.bin image from the pull-down menu and click on the Burn button:
    2. Select the SPACE_ROM.bin image from the pull-down menu and click on the Burn button:
  10. You will not see anything displayed on the ICE LCD screen yet. Unplug the ICE from power.
  11. Unplug the parallel cable from the ICE.
  12. Plug in the power to the ICE again. The demo should start running after a brief delay.
  13. Now learn how the demo works!
